The HZ University of Applied Sciences for the programme of Water Management offers the opportunity to go abroad during the third year of your study. One semester as a minor which means a period to be spent in another University, the other one as an internship, a job opportunity in a company or in a research group. These two periods happen to be during your third year at the HZ. This awesome experience has to be organised in your second year and it is a very long process, but our International office will help you with this! If you want to know more about the possibilities abroad for the Water Management students, then this blog is what you are looking for!

Types of Minor

There are two different types of Minor:

  • The “classic” minor, in which you will take classes and follow courses in the partner University. To pass this semester you will have to do exams and achieve a certain amount of local credits that are equal to (at least) 30 ECs of the HZ University of Applied Sciences.
  • The “research” minor, in which you will be part of a research group in the partner University and you will do a specific research. To pass this semester you will have to submit a portfolio that will be graded by your teachers at the HZ, and you will then get the 30 ECs necessary.

Partner Universities

During the current academic year (2017/2018) there are 18 partner Universities abroad available for Water Management students located in Europe (Finland, Italy, Lithuania, Spain, Sweden and Turkey) or outside Europe (Brazil, Canada, China, South Korea, United States and Thailand). To see the list of partner Universities you can check the MoveOn website that shows both the location of the Universities and if they offer the “classic” minor or the “research” minor - some of them offer both possibilities!

Application Process

For the application process you will be guided by our International Office, that will provide meetings with all the information, but here there are some of the most important points to take into account:

  • There are two application slots, the first one is in Autumn (before the Christmas break), here the spots available for each University will be filled up by looking at your grades average of the Propedeuse phase, the second slot is in winter (after the Christmas break) and during this time there will be a “first come - first served” politic, the first ones who register will get the place. So make sure to get your Propedeuse (first year certificate) during your first year so that you can have more probabilities to get into the University you prefer.
  • You will have to list six Universities in your application, ranking them in function of your priorities.
  • For the English speaking countries (in this case the United States and Canada) you will have to follow an extra english course and have an exam. Without that extra English exam you will not be able to leave for your minor.
  • To leave for your minor period, as the HZ regulations arein the academic year 2017-2018, you need to get your first year certificate and 30 ECs of the second year, without these conditions you will not be able to leave.

A minor is a nice opportunity to expand your knowledge while traveling the world :) If you have any question contact the international office or leave a comment down below! Stay tuned to hear more about student experiences!
