About studying Engineering at HZ

What will you learn?

In the Engineering programme at HZ, you become a versatile professional who analyses and solves complex technical problems. You learn to combine technology, sustainability, and creativity to design innovative products, systems, and processes that work and that matter. As an HZ Engineering student, you learn how to:

You will learn to:

  • tackle technical challenges using smart, hands-on methods
  • design and improve products and processes that are efficient and sustainable
  • upgrade existing technology and make it future-proof
  • understand how complex systems function and interact
  • use engineering to make the world cleaner, smarter, and more sustainable
  • create innovative machines and products with real-world impact

From day one, you work on practical assignments, often in teams, for real companies. After a solid theoretical foundation, you put your knowledge into practice: researching problems, developing plans of action, and presenting your ideas to clients and peers.

Study tracks

In the first year, you explore the wide world of technology. After this year you choose between a technical or a creative track, followed by choosing a study track that suits you in your final year.

A top-rated programme

Engineering is a top-rated programme in the Netherlands, according to the Keuzegids 2026.

Programme overview

Discover how the programme is structured, from courses and projects to internships and extracurriculair activities.

In your first year, you get a broad introduction to engineering. You explore the four study tracks available later in the programme:

You build your skills through projects, courses, and workshops.

In your second year, you work on projects for real companies. Within each project, you choose a role that aligns with one of the four study tracks.

You develop professional skills and create industry-standard deliverables such as designs for products, installations, and machines. Workshops give you the specific knowledge and skills needed to complete your projects successfully. You also follow a number of in-depth courses to further strengthen your technical foundation as an engineer.

Minor

In the third year of the programme, you choose your minor (a one-semester programme). A minor will enable you to deepen or broaden your knowledge and skills. You can do this at the HZ or at another university of applied sciences at home or abroad.

Internship

During the other semester, you will do an internship where you gain work experience. You can choose whether you stay in the Netherlands or go abroad.

Study tracks and graduation research project

In your final year, you choose one of four study tracks. In the first semester, you follow courses and work on projects within your chosen study track.

In the second semester, you complete your graduation project at a company. You research and design technical improvements and innovations in a real professional setting, either in the Netherlands or abroad.

This is where your knowledge and skills from the entire Engineering programme at HZ come together. On completing the programme, you are ready to work as a professional engineer.

HZ Honours Programme

Want an extra challenge alongside your degree? The HZ Honours Programme is an optional programme running alongside your bachelor's that gives you the freedom to tackle a real-world social issue, one you choose yourself. Working with students from different study programmes, you can address national or international challenges, from sustainable production to community development.

Previous Honours students have travelled to destinations including Costa Rica, Zanzibar, Rio de Janeiro, Bali and the Philippines to work on impactful international projects. As an ICT student, you could contribute by building digital platforms, analysing data, developing apps, creating AI solutions or improving smart systems that help organisations and communities solve complex problems.

After completing the programme, you receive an additional Honours certificate alongside your Bachelor of Science degree.
