Vast coastlines to take a refreshing dip and cosy cities to enjoy a bitterbal on the terrace. The Netherlands is a great country to study in. You will find a mix of many cultures and nationalities. Almost everyone speaks English, making it easy to meet peers and experience a feeling of home in no time. Will you come and discover the Netherlands while studying?
The vibrant Netherlands
The Netherlands is home to 18 million people in a relatively small area. Yet you will find many vast landscapes and beautiful natural areas. That means Dutch cities are vibrant and cosy.
The west and north coasts of the Netherlands lie on the North Sea. More than a quarter of the country, including much of Zeeland, lies below water level. Thanks to dykes and delta works, we keep inland areas dry. That is why the Dutch are known as masters of water management.

According to the Global Peace Index, the Netherlands is one of the safest countries in the world and among the top 10 happiest countries in the world. And there is a reason for this. The Netherlands is a broad-minded and welcoming country. You see this especially in the way people talk to each other: you are free to express your opinion as well as to be who you are.
This diversity is not only reflected in the country, but also at HZ. Thanks to various initiatives within our community, as an international student you immediately feel welcome. You can join an action group that promotes inclusion and diversity within the university. Or put your hands in the earth and grow edible crops with fellow students!
Dutch higher education
The quality of Dutch higher education is widely acknowledged. In the Netherlands, we have two main types of regular higher education: universities of applied sciences (hbo) and research universities (wo). The HZ is a university of applied sciences. We offer study programmes that focus on the practical application of art and science. This means that gaining practical work experience through internships is an important part of your vocational training. The teaching style at HZ is interactive and student-centered.
