Plan your finances before you apply
Before applying to a programme, please review the fees and financial requirements to ensure you are fully prepared for your studies

Step 1: Check the admission requirements
To be accepted as a student there are certain university admission requirements you have to meet. These are dependent on your chosen field of study and your level of English.
To qualify for general university admission, you are required to have a diploma equivalent to the Dutch Secondary Education Diploma (havo/vwo/mbo level 4). With a diploma mentioned on the foreign acceptable diplomas list, you are admissible anyway provided you have met all the additional and language requirements. If your diploma is not on this list, we invite you to apply as well. We will then need to evaluate the level of your diploma.
Depending on your chosen programme, there may be additional entry requirements you have to meet. The most important ones are listed below.

All courses and examinations will be in English, so you need a good command of spoken and written English. The level required for admission should be an equivalent of the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of 6.0. For the scores of other accepted language tests than IELTS, the table below applies.

IELTS Academic
The IELTS Academic test is suitable for those wanting to study in an English-speaking environment or university (higher education).
We cannot accept IELTS online edition tests.
TOEFL
We also accept the TOEFL Home Edition Tests, only in case it is not possible to make use of the regular language tests due to the language test centers on location being closed or inaccessible due to unsafe situations in a country.
TOEIC
As long as the modules ‘Speaking and Writing’ and ‘Listening and Reading’ were successfully completed.
Pearson PTE Academic
We cannot accept Pearson PTE Academic at-home edition tests.
LanguageCert Academic
We also cannot accept LanguageCert Home Edition tests.
Cambridge

Language exemptions
Exempted from the English language test requirement are students with:
- an International Baccalaureate (subject 'English A Language and Literature HL or SL’ / 'English B Language and Literature HL’)
- a (High School) diploma from an international school accredited in the US or by an official international organisation or UK GCSE/GCE certificates
- a European Baccalaureate diploma with at least 50% of the subjects taught in English and English as a first foreign language
- a French Baccalauréat diploma including the ‘Section Européennes’ or ‘Option Internationale’ (is currently called ‘Baccalauréat Francais international (BFI)’)
If you graduated in The Netherlands, United Kingdom, Ireland, United States, Canada (except Quebec), Malta, Australia or New-Zealand or if you are holding a diploma (including English as an exam subject) listed on the diploma list, drawn up on behalf of the associations of institutions of higher education, you do not need to take a mandatory English test. Provided that your final grade for English language on your diploma is sufficient.
If you do not meet the above education requirements and if you are at least 21 years old you may be exempted from the general admission requirement. HZ provides the possibility of taking an alternative entrance exam.
If you come from abroad and do not have a valid Dutch diploma, you must have a diploma equivalent to the Dutch Secondary Education Diploma (havo/vwo/mbo level 4). You can find which ones on this list of diplomas. You must also prove that you have passed all four sections of the NT2-II State Exam if you are going to attend a Dutch study programme. More information about the NT2-II State Examination can be found on the website of the Board for Tests and Examinations.
This language requirement also applies to students with a residence in Suriname or in countries that are part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands who have a diploma equivalent to the Dutch Secondary Education Diploma (havo/vwo/mbo level 4).
Step 2: Check the deadlines
We advise you to apply before May 1. The official deadline is:
- 1 June, non-EU students* (files must be complete before this date)
- 1 August, EU students
* Because of the visa-procedure the deadline to apply for non-EU students is earlier than the deadline for EU students.
**Any application submitted after this deadline will only be considered in exceptional cases, and at the discretion of the Head of the Admissions Office.
Only selected study programmes start in February. The deadline for this is:
- 30 November, non-EU students* (files must be complete before this date)
- 31 December, EU students**
* Because of the visa-procedure the deadline to apply for non-EU students is earlier than the deadline for EU students.
**Any application submitted after this deadline will only be considered in exceptional cases, and at the discretion of the Head of the Admissions Office.
Step 3: Apply via Studielink
Apply via Studielink. Here you can arrange your (re-)enrolment at institutions of higher education in the Netherlands.

- Apply for a username and password, so you can register. Keep your passport/ID within reach.
- Log in with your new username and password and apply for one of our study programmes.
Do you encounter any problems when using Studielink? Read more about the frequently asked questions.
Step 4: Submit required documents to HZ's International Application System (ias.hz.nl)
You will receive an e-mail with a link to the HZ International Application System (ias.hz.nl) immediately after having submitted your application to Studielink. Complete your application by attaching the following documents to your file:
- A copy of your secondary school certificate, including a transcript of records (list of grades). If you have not yet graduated or have not yet received your diploma, please upload an official recent transcript of records.
- A copy of your valid passport or ID-card
- If required, an official English language test (IELTS, TOEFL, TOEIC, Pearson PTE Academic, LanguageCert Academic or Cambridge).
All above mentioned documents must be in Dutch, English, French, Spanish or German. If this is not the case, you must upload a translation in one of these languages. Students who have already graduated should upload an official (sworn) translation of their educational background documents. For students who have not yet graduated a good translation suffices. However, after graduation an official (sworn) translation must be provided.
Conditional letter of acceptance
If your application file is complete, we will inform you about your acceptance within one week. You will be sent a conditional letter of acceptance, if your records meet the admission requirements.
Step 5: Study choice check
Before you start your study programme, you will be invited to take part in the study choice check. What can you expect from this and what is it?
Through the study choice check we want to help you make a suitable study choice. We also want to get to know you a little better before you start the programme.
What you can expect from the programme varies per programme. Programmes are free to select activities for the study choice check. This means that if you have registered for two study programmes at HZ, you may have to go through two different choice checks.
For the study choice check, you will in any case complete the study choice check questionnaire you will be invited to via e-mail. By answering these questions, we gain insight into you as a future student. For instance, who you are and why you have chosen the programme.
If you have questions about yourself as a future student or if you have doubts about your choice of study, you can request a personal study interview after you have applied for a study programme and completed the questionnaire. During this interview with a teacher from the study programme, you can ask all the questions you still have about your choice of study. On the other hand, when the study programme has questions about you, you can also be invited for a personal study interview.
When you have had a personal study interview with a teacher from the study programme, you will receive a personal study advice. In this advice, the teacher will indicate in which areas he or she expects any difficulties and will give tips on how you can work on these. The study advice can help you to finalise your choice of study.
The programme may also organise a group meeting. During this meeting, you will get to know your future fellow students and lecturers and can expect information and activities about the programme of your choice. You can also ask any questions you still have about the programme.
You will receive more information about the study choice check for the programme of your choice after you have registered for the programme. You will receive login details and access to the digital environment containing the information that applies to you.

Insurance non-EU students
Non-EU students must have private international healthcare insurance. It's recommended to get insurance in the Netherlands, as foreign insurers may not cover liability here. The ICS complete package from AON Student insurance is a reliable option with comprehensive coverage.

Insurance EU-students
EU-students don’t need Dutch public healthcare insurance if already insured in their home country. Request a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) from your insurer and ensure you have adequate coverage for studying abroad. Additional coverage options, like ICS Start or ICS Start+ from AON Student insurance, are also available.

Registration with municipality
Foreign students staying in the Netherlands for more than four months must register with the local municipal register.
