Payment information

Find all the information you need on the payment of tuition fees, digital authorisation, immigration fees (non-EU) and cancellation. You can only pay the tuition fees via Studielink. The one condition for this is that you have a bank account in a country that is part of the SEPA-area. Please note: the Caribbean part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, namely Aruba, Curacao, and Sint Maarten and the three special municipalities of Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba, do not belong to this SEPA area.

As an EU-student you have two options for the payment of tuition:

  1. Direct debit payment of the full tuition amount at the beginning of the academic year
If you choose this option, the full tuition fee is debited from the specified bank account in one payment. The payment will be made around September.
  2. Direct debit payment in ten instalments
You can choose to pay your tuition fees in ten instalments. Each month a part of the tuition fee will be collected from the specified bank account. The first instalment includes €24 of administration costs.

Digital authorisation
If you have an European IBAN bank account in the SEPA-area, you can pay your tuition fees by digital authorisation from your own personal bank account. Take note: do not fill in bank details of someone else (for example your parents).

Take the following steps for digital authorisation:

  • The digital authorisation have to be done in Studielink (as from June)
  • Sign in with your DigiD
  • Go to 'My to do list' and click 'enter your payment details'. Here you can enter your payment details and
in how many instalments you wish to pay (one, or ten equal instalments). After you have done this, you will receive an e-mail via Studielink asking you to confirm the digital authorisation. Only upon confirmation have you fulfilled your payment obligation.

Extra costs
While living in the Netherlands you are required to have a health insurance policy. As a foreign student you must sign up for a health insurance and a liability insurance plan.

Payment tuition fee without a bank account within the SEPA-area
If you do not have a bank account within the SEPA area and you still want to pay in instalments, then it is important to open a bank account as soon as possible after your arrival in the Netherlands and to enter the details of this account in Studielink before 1 September. If you fail to do this, the full amount of the tuition fees due for the academic year of that year must have been transferred to the HZ University of Applied Sciences bank account before 1 September. If you do not have a bank account within the SEPA area and you cannot or do not want to apply for a bank account, the tuition fees must be paid in full before 1 September. You can request an invoice for this by sending an email to csa@hz.nl.

Payment tuition fees
Non-EU students will receive an invoice from HZ in June. There are two options for the payment:

  • Payment with an IBAN bank account
Are you a non-EU student, already living in the EU, and do you have an European IBAN bank account in the SEPA-area? Then you can pay your tuition fees by digital authorisation from your own personal bank account. Take note: do not fill in bank details of someone else (for example your parents). Take the following steps for digital authorisation:

Extra costs
In addition to tuition, non-EU students should be aware of additional administration and living costs.

  • Costs of living & immigration fees (non-EU)
Costs of living/year: a proof of sufficient means is required by the Dutch immigration services. These amounts are described in our Visa- & residence permit information leaflet which can be found here. However, at each re-enrolment (a student is enrolled for one academic year – from September till August) you may be asked again to provide proof of sufficient funds for the next period of stay.
  • Health insurance
While living in the Netherlands you are required to have a health insurance policy. As a foreign student you must sign up for a health insurance and a liability insurance plan.

To finance your study, you may be eligible for a student loan, for student funding or for postgraduate funding in the Netherlands. To determine if you qualify for financial support to fund your study abroad, you can check the financial aid.

When you are a student at HZ University of Applied Sciences and you are going abroad for a study or internship outside of the Netherlands, you can apply for a grant or scholarship.

HZ Grant

HZ offers a HZ Grant for students who study or do an unpaid internship outside the EU. As far as we know, HZ is the only university of applied sciences in the Netherlands that subsidies its students with a grant.

NL Scholarship

This scholarship is meant for full-time HZ students who want to study, do research or an internship outside the European Economic Area (EEA). The EEA consists of the EU countries and Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. The Holland Scholarship is a scholarship made available by the Dutch Ministry of Education Culture and Science together with Dutch research universities and universities of applied sciences. The scholarship amounts to a one-off payment of € 1,250 and is meant as a contribution towards your study expenses.

Erasmus+ grant

If you do part of your study or do your internship at an HZ partner institute, you can apply for this grant. The Erasmus+ is a grant that the European Union has made available in order to stimulate students from its member states to gain experience abroad during their education; to enhance their languages, to become acquainted with other cultures, etc. The grant is a contribution to the expenses you will make, it will most probably not cover all the expenses.

As soon as you are a student of HZ, you will get more information on how to apply for a grant.
