Here you'll find all the information you need to know about the application procedure. Be sure to follow all instructions regarding applying for a Bachelor (Associate Degree) or Master programme or to apply as an exchange student.
How to apply for a Bachelor programme
Follow the two steps explained below to apply for one of our Bachelor (Associate Degree) programmes. We accept applications beginning in October which means you can apply before finishing your secondary education. We advise you to apply as soon as possible so that you have enough time to prepare for your study.
To study at HZ, you must first apply online via Studielink, the online application system for higher education in the Netherlands. Follow the instructions carefully because you will need to follow the whole procedure for your application request to be complete.
1. Apply via Studielink
- Apply via Studielink. Here you can arrange your (re-)enrolment at institutions of higher education in the Netherlands.
- Choose 'Log in without a DigiD.' or choose 'Log in with eIDAS' if you are from Belgium, Czech Republic, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Slovakia, Estonia, Croatia, Portugal, Spain, Latvia or Lithuania.
- Apply for a username and password, so you can register. Keep your passport/ID within reach. (As of 27 January, international students must have their passport/ID verified on studielink.nl)
- Log in with your new username and password and apply for one of our Bachelor (Associate Degree) programmes.

2. Submit required documents to HZ's International Application System (ias.hz.nl)
You will receive an e-mail with a link to the HZ International Application System (ias.hz.nl) immediately after having submitted your application to Studielink. Complete your application by attaching the following documents to your file:
- A copy of your secondary school certificate, including a transcript of records (list of grades). If you have not yet graduated or have not yet received your diploma, please upload an official recent transcript of records.
- A copy of your valid passport or ID-card
- If required, an official English language test (IELTS, TOEFL, TOEIC or Cambridge).
All above mentioned documents must be in Dutch, English, French, Spanish or German. If this is not the case, you must upload a translation in one of these languages. Students who have already graduated should upload an official (sworn) translation of their educational background documents.
For students who have not yet graduated a good translation suffices. However, after graduation an official (sworn) translation must be provided.
Conditional letter of acceptance
If your application file is complete, we will inform you about your acceptance within one week. You will be sent a conditional letter of acceptance, if your records meet the admission requirements.
Closing dates for applications are:
Start in September: we advise you to apply before May 1.
- 1 June, non-EU students* (files must be complete before this date)
- 1 August, EU students**
Start in February (only for select study programmes):
- 30 November, non-EU students* (files must be complete before this date)
- 31 December, EU students**
* Because of the visa-procedure the deadline to apply for non-EU students is earlier than the deadline for EU students.
**Any application submitted after this deadline will only be considered in exceptional cases, and at the discretion of the Head of the Admissions Office.
As soon as you have received your conditional offer to study at HZ, you can start applying for a student room in Vlissingen or Middelburg. Please check the information on accommodation to see how to apply for a student room. The earlier you apply the better choice you have for finding accommodation that best suits your wishes.
How to apply for a Master programme
To start your study programme, you must first apply online via Studielink, the online application system for higher education in the Netherlands. The procedure is quite easy, just follow the instructions below.
Please note that the application procedure is processed by HZ University of Applied Sciences, so make sure you select this university of applied sciences within Studielink to enroll for the River Delta Development programme.
We advise you to apply as soon as possible so that you have enough time to prepare for your study. Please note that a letter of motivation and an intake interview with the admission committee are also part of the selection procedure.
1. Apply via Studielink
- Apply via Studielink. Here you can arrange your (re-)enrolment at institutions of higher education in the Netherlands.
- Apply for a username and password, so you can register. Keep your passport/ID within reach. (As of 27 January, international students must have their passport/ID verified on studielink.nl)
- Log in with your new username and password and apply for the River Delta Development programme within HZ University of Applied Sciences.
- Please note that you can start in September. We accept applications for September from halfway through October the year before.
2. Submit required documents to HZ's International Student Administration System (ias.hz.nl)
You will receive an e-mail with a link to the HZ International Application System (ias.hz.nl) immediately after having submitted your application to Studielink. Once you have applied, you will receive an e-mail from our administration system. This e-mail will contain a link to our International Student Administration System. This e-mail will be sent to you within three business days from the date of your application on Studielink.
Submit required documents
Complete your application by attaching the following documents to your file:
- A copy of your bachelor’s degree or certificate equal to a bachelor’s degree, including a transcript of records (list of grades). If you have not yet graduated or have not yet received your diploma, please upload an official recent transcript of records.
- A copy of your valid passport or ID-card.
- If required, an official English language test (IELTS, TOEFL, TOEIC or Cambridge).
- Your motivation letter.
All above mentioned documents must be in Dutch, English, French, Spanish or German. If this is not the case, you must upload a translation in one of these languages. Students who have already graduated should upload an official (sworn) translation of their educational background documents.
For students who have not yet graduated a good translation suffices. However, after graduation an official (sworn) translation must be provided.
When your application file is complete and your motivation letter is approved, you will get an invitation for an interview (this could be a face-to-face interview or a Skype call). If your letter of motivation and intake interview are both positively assessed, you will be sent a conditional letter of acceptance.

• June 1, Non-EU students
Because of the visa-procedure the deadline to apply for non-EU students is earlier than the deadline for EU students.
As soon as you have received your conditional offer to start your study, you can start applying for a student room. If desired, the universities of applied sciences will assist you in arranging on-site housing. This may be done by providing the housing itself or by helping you get in touch with parties that can provide housing.
How can I find a room in Middelburg?
APV will be able to help you. Accommodation varies from rooms in student houses to studio apartments and apartments ranging in size from small to large, furnished or unfurnished, single units (where you live by yourself) or apartments that you share with others. Room prices range from €220 to €600 (for a house). Most rooms are located in the city center or near the city center. Please let APV know you’ve enrolled for the master’s programme River Delta Development.
How to apply as an exchange student
If you have been selected by your home university to study one or two semesters at the HZ, you may start your application by registering through our online application procedure. Please follow the procedure carefully to make sure your application is registered. The following documents are required with your application:
- An official recent transcript of records (list of grades)
- A copy of your valid passport or ID card
- A document which certifies your level of English language
