How studying at HZ works

Starting university in another country can mean getting used to a different way of studying. At HZ, your study week combines different learning activities with independent study and practical assignments. The exact structure depends on your study programme, but here's what you can generally expect.

What does a study week look like?

Your week can include lectures, workshops, practical sessions, project meetings and coaching. You will also spend time studying independently, preparing for classes and working on assignments or projects. The balance between these activities differs per programme and can also change throughout your studies.

How do you learn at HZ?

At HZ, learning can take many forms. Alongside classes and independent study, projects and group work and internships are an important part of many study programmes. You apply what you learn to practical questions and learn to work together with other students. Depending on your programme, you might work on a business case, conduct research, develop a technical solution or complete an assignment connected to the professional field.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment at HZ is not limited to written exams. Depending on your programme and course, you may be assessed through exams, practical assignments, reports, presentations, portfolios or individual and group projects. The exact forms of assessment differ between study programmes.

Study credits and the academic year

HZ uses the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS). A full academic year normally consists of 60 ECTS credits. You earn credits by successfully completing the different components of your programme. The academic year starts in September and is divided into two semesters. Exact schedules, study periods and assessment periods depend on your programme.
