Studying abroad comes with different costs, so it's important to know what to expect. Here you will find information about tuition fees, how and when to pay, additional financial requirements, scholarships and financial support.
Tuition fees
The tuition fee you pay depends on your nationality and the programme you study. Below you can find the tuition fees for the 2026–2027 academic year.
The tuition fee for a full-time Bachelor's or Master's programme is:
- €2,694 per academic year
The institutional tuition fee for a Bachelor's or Master's programme is:
€9,893 per academic year
Master River Delta Development
The Master's programme River Delta Development takes two years. The tuition fee for non-EU/EEA students is:
€9,893 per academic year
If you come to HZ as an Exchange or Erasmus student through an exchange agreement between HZ and your home university, you do not pay tuition fees to HZ. Non-EU/EEA exchange students may have additional immigration costs.
How do I pay my tuition fees?
How you pay your tuition fees depends on whether your bank account is within the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA). You can pay the full amount at once or, if eligible, in instalments.
Paying with a SEPA bank account
If you have a IBAN bank account within the SEPA area, you can pay your tuition fees by digital authorisation through Studielink.
You can choose between:
- One payment
The full tuition fee is debited from your bank account around September. - Ten instalments
Part of the tuition fee is debited each month. An administration fee of €24 is added to the first instalment.
How to arrange your digital authorisation
Digital authorisation is available in Studielink from June.
- Sign in to Studielink with your DigiD.
- Go to My to do list and select enter your payment details.
- Enter your bank details and choose whether you want to pay in one payment or ten equal instalments.
- You will receive an email from Studielink asking you to confirm the digital authorisation.
Your payment obligation is only fulfilled once you have confirmed the digital authorisation.
Make sure you use your own personal bank account. Do not enter the bank details of someone else, such as a parent.
Good to know
Not sure whether your bank account is within the SEPA area? Check the current list of SEPA countries and territories on the European Payments Council website. Aruba, Curaçao, Sint Maarten, Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba are not part of the SEPA area.
If you do not have a bank account within the SEPA area but want to pay in instalments, you need to open a bank account after arriving in the Netherlands and enter the details in Studielink before 1 September. If you do not do this, the full tuition fee for the academic year must be transferred to HZ before 1 September.
If you cannot or do not want to open a SEPA bank account, you also need to pay the full tuition fee before 1 September. You can request an invoice from the HZ Student Office.
Non-EU students receive an invoice from HZ in June.
If you already live in the EU and have an IBAN bank account within the SEPA area, you can pay by digital authorisation through Studielink using the procedure above "paying with a SEPA bank account".

Additional costs and financial requirements
In addition to your tuition fees, there are other costs and financial requirements you may need to consider.
Health and liability insurance
While living in the Netherlands, you are required to have health insurance. As an international student, you must arrange health insurance and liability insurance.
Additional requirements for non-EU students
If you are a non-EU student, additional immigration costs and financial requirements apply.
Proof of sufficient funds
The Dutch immigration authorities require you to provide proof that you have sufficient funds to cover your living expenses.The required amount is included in our visa and residence permit information. You may be asked to provide proof of sufficient funds again when you re-enrol for a new academic year.

Financial support
Depending on your personal situation, you may be eligible for financial support to help finance your studies in the Netherlands. This could include a student loan, student funding or postgraduate funding. Check the financial aid information to find out whether you are eligible and which conditions apply

Full scholarships are uncommon in the Dutch education system, but HZ offers scholarship opportunities for eligible students.
The NL Scholarship is a €5,000 scholarship for international students from outside the European Union (EU) who wish to study a technical and sustainability centered bachelor’s programme at HZ.
The scholarship is funded by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science together with Dutch universities and universities of applied sciences.
Practical information
Total amount of €5,000
Paid in two instalments of €2,500*
Awarded for one academic year
*Please note: If you leave your study programme before 1 April 2028, you will not receive the second instalment.
The NL Scholarship is not a full scholarship and does not cover the full tuition fee and living expenses.

Who can apply?
To be eligible for the NL Scholarship, you must:
be from outside the European Union (EU);
have not previously studied in the Netherlands;
have an IELTS score of 6.5 or higher, or an equivalent qualification;
apply for an eligible full-time bachelor’s programme;
have received a conditional or full Letter of Acceptance from HZ.
How to apply
Send your application to study@hz.nl before 1 May 2027
Your application must include:
a motivational letter explaining why you chose your HZ programme and how would you like to contribute to the Netherlands and our local areas with your future education in your field of interest.
your transcript of records, including information about the grading or assessment system used by your school;
a recommendation letter.
a copy of your letter of acceptance from HZ
a copy of your English language certificate
The HZ Scholarship Committee assesses the applications based on your academic background, motivation and potential contribution to the Netherlands.
You will receive the result within six weeks after the application deadline.
If you're an HZ student and plan to study or do an internship abroad as part of your programme, other grants may be available, including the HZ Grant, NL Scholarship and Erasmus+ grant.

Cancellation and refunds
If you need to cancel your enrolment before the start of your study programme, please inform the HZ Student Office by email. If HZ receives your cancellation before the start of your study programme, the full tuition fee will be refunded. If applicable, any living expenses you have paid to HZ will also be refunded.
