We all produce enormous amounts of data every day. This data is a wealth of information for companies and organizations. As a Data Scientist you convert this data into valuable insights for companies and organisations.

Why choose Applied Data Science & AI?

Data is everywhere, and organisations need professionals who can turn it into valuable insights. In the Applied Data Science & AI programme, you learn how to analyse data, recognise patterns and develop smart solutions using machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI).

You work on real-world challenges such as predicting market opportunities, improving business processes, detecting fraud or forecasting health trends. Besides technical skills in data analysis, programming and AI, you also learn to think critically about the outcomes of algorithms and data models. This enables you to translate complex information into reliable advice that organisations can act on. At HZ, you combine IT knowledge with problem-solving, communication and analytical skills, preparing you for a future in one of the fastest-growing fields in technology.

Part of the Information and Communication Technology bachelor

You apply for the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) bachelor programme. In the first phase of the programme, you build a broad foundation in areas such as programming, software development, data and IT infrastructure. Later in the programme, you choose your study track, such as Software Engineering or Applied Data Science & AI. The Applied Data Science & AI track focuses on analysing data, developing intelligent solutions and applying artificial intelligence to solve real-world challenges.

Programme structure for this track

During the first two years you discover the broad field of IT. At the end of your second study year, you choose one of two study routes: Software Engineering or Applied Data Science & AI.

When you choose Applied Data Science & AI, your minor (a one-semester programme) and internship in year 3, in the Netherlands or abroad, are fully focused on your chosen study track. This allows you to deepen your knowledge, gain hands-on experience in professional practice and further develop your technical and problem-solving skills in an international environment.

In the fourth year, the first semester is devoted to your chosen study route. You get started with a project and follow courses in the field of Data Science.

Project
You and your team work on a project for a client. The projects you can work on are very diverse. For example, students have worked on a large project with municipalities. By analyzing images and smart algorithms, students were able to digitally detect damage in sewers. This makes the maintenance of the sewers a lot more efficient and effective for the municipalities. They have also tried to recognize patterns in fish by means of image recognition, so that better and more sustainable fish could be farmed.

Courses
You follow courses, such as:

  • Cloud Computing
During this course you discover how to process large amounts of data that no longer fit in a computer.
  • Data Management
With Data Science you must take many different factors into account. You will therefore learn everything about legal rules and the privacy and security side of Data Science.

Graduating
You graduate at a company of your choice.

Career prospects

As an IT graduate you can work in many different professions. You have a broad education, but the Applied Data Science & AI study track also involves a number of specific professions. You can work as:

  • Data Scientist
  • Data Analyst

The Netherlands offers strong career opportunities for Applied Data Science & AI graduates, with a growing demand for data and AI professionals across sectors such as technology, healthcare, logistics and finance. Many companies operate internationally, where English is often the main working language. However, learning Dutch can broaden your career opportunities, especially in roles involving local organisations or collaboration with Dutch-speaking clients and teams. At HZ, you can follow free Dutch classes to support your career.

Applied Data Science & AI provides a strong foundation for further studies. After graduation, you can continue with a master’s programme in areas such as Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Business Analytics or Cybersecurity, in the Netherlands or abroad.
