From a young age, Chloé has lived in many different countries and seen what human influence does to the environment. Now she is studying Global Project and Change Management at HZ in the Netherlands. "I want to make the world more sustainable through business. GPCM is the perfect fit for that."
Impact of human actions
As a daughter of a sailor, Chloé and her family grew up in various countries. During those years she experienced how human actions damage nature and the environment. "I spent most of my childhood in Thailand. I’ve also lived in France, South Africa, and Mexico. Growing up in various countries surrounded by an international community has influenced my perspective of the world. I saw changes in nature and communities over time, which made me realise the impact of human actions on the environment."
Working towards sustainability through business
Chloe is determined to work on a change, and she also knows by what route. "While I wouldn’t call myself an activist, I’m interested in working towards sustainability through business, helping companies adopt greener practices and better policies."
Hands-on learning
Chloé has always been interested in business, especially since she grew up around entrepreneurs. "However, I didn’t want to pursue a typical international business degree", she says. "This program, combining business and sustainability, seemed like a great fit. It also offers hands-on learning, where we work directly with companies, which really appealed to me."
Studying at HZ and living in the Netherlands
For Chloé. it was easy to integrate as an international student at HZ. And not only because she's used to relocate from time to time. "The study programme is very international, and all the teachers were welcoming. The course structure is different from what I was used to, but the portfolio-based assessments were easier for me to adjust to. The practical approach and collaboration on real-world projects suit my learning style. I really like living in the Netherlands. The people are very friendly and welcoming. And also straightforward in a nice way, which I really like."
Communication skills
During the study programme, Chloé grows in her soft skills and leadership and communication skills. "GPCM emphasizes communication skills, especially in collaborating with professionals on projects. Public speaking is developed through regular presentations. Giving and receiving feedback is a big part of the process, and while it can be intimidating, it becomes easier with practice. Over time, the class becomes very much like a family."
Fieldwork - and the freedom to work on your own sustainable goals
The program encourages fieldwork whenever possible, says Chloé. "Students often go on trips to study real-world applications, such as visiting sustainability markets in Rotterdam or windmill sites. Additionally, students organize weekly group activities that align with their studies, providing opportunities for hands-on learning. Students propose ideas, discuss them within the group, and then vote on what to do. Teachers generally allow a lot of freedom if students can justify an idea's relevance."
A plan for improving water quality
One of the projects that Chloé found very interesting, was during the water semester, where she worked on improving the water quality of a nearby lake (Lake Veere). "We collaborated with municipalities and organizations, conducted research, and presented a feasibility plan. The organization found our recommendations valuable, which was fulfilling beyond just getting a grade."
Freedom of choice also gives responsibility
The GPCM programme also gives a lot of autonomy and creative freedom in the way students present what they have learned in their portfolio. "There is a good amount of freedom as long as students include all the required elements. They can design their projects in their own way and even add extra aspects that interest them. There is also a separate section in the portfolio for personal work, such as volunteering or conducting independent research, which can also be graded." However, while the program allows flexibility in focusing on personal interests, it is still highly structured, Chloé says. "Students must be present every day from 9 to 5, and missing even one class can have a significant impact. The workload is intensive, and students must take responsibility for their own learning."
Ambitions
Does Chloé already have clear ambitions for after graduation? "Partially", she says. "My plans change frequently as I learn new things, but I’m leaning towards working in sustainability, particularly in consulting. I’d like to help businesses become more sustainable and comply with new regulations, like those around carbon neutrality and negativity, which are becoming increasingly important. The skills I’m learning now are versatile and can be applied in many sectors, so the possibilities are exciting!"
