On Tuesday, November 5, HZ University of Applied Sciences took a significant step toward more inclusive education by signing the declaration of intent for the UN Convention on Equal Opportunities in Higher Education.
During a celebratory gathering, Barbara Oomen affirmed HZ’s commitment to a safe and inclusive learning environment where students and staff can develop and feel free to be themselves. “At HZ, as a personal university of applied sciences, we aim to contribute to a better world,” said Oomen. “This is our direction. Inclusion is part of that—it enhances HZ as a meeting place and safe haven. We are already one of the leading universities of applied sciences in the Netherlands in this area, but by signing this convention, we promise to give it even more attention, fully in line with our new educational vision!”
Inspiring Program
The signing of the UN Convention was part of an inspiring program that also included the launch of HZ’s new educational vision. HZ students and alumni engaged in a panel discussion, sharing their experiences and ideas for an inclusive HZ, followed by the official signing. Elke van Doorn from ECIO gave a presentation highlighting the goals of the UN Convention and how these can be integrated into educational practices to promote equal opportunities for all students.
Inclusion as a Core Value
By signing the UN Convention, HZ underscores its commitment to inclusion. This plan articulates the ambition to provide a learning environment based on trust and inclusivity, where students and staff can thrive. Driven by this ambition, HZ has implemented organization-wide initiatives for both staff and students on themes such as 'diversity, inclusion, and equality,' 'social safety,' SDGs, and 'community.' The policy for 'studying with support needs' is continuously being developed.
HZ promotes student success and well-being in several ways. Even during the admission process, prospective students are informed about support services. Students have an academic career coach within their program as a primary contact for guidance, along with a support team that includes student deans, student psychologists, language coaches, specialized coaches, peer students, and confidential advisors.
High Student Satisfaction
Known as “the personal university of applied sciences,” HZ receives high ratings from its students. In the 2024 National Student Survey (NSE), students reported feeling safe to be themselves within the institution. This culture of trust and inclusion is the foundation of HZ’s mission to create an accessible learning environment for all and to promote equal opportunities in education.
