Homesickness is a common experience for many students studying abroad. I won’t lie—it happens. I do miss my family and my hometown from time to time. But the good news is that there are effective ways to manage it. Here’s how:

Balance fun and studies

While it’s tempting to party and enjoy your newfound freedom, don’t forget the primary reason you’re abroad—your education. A balanced schedule that includes both social activities and study time is essential for success.

Stay busy and social

The key to overcoming homesickness is keeping yourself occupied. Make new friends, join the HZ Community, cook meals with fellow students, play games, watch movies, or explore your new city. Staying active helps keep your mind off missing home.

Use technology to stay connected

When homesickness hits, a quick call home can make all the difference. However, try to keep these calls short and sweet. Long conversations can sometimes intensify feelings of longing for home.

Embrace the growing-up phase

Your first year abroad is a period of significant personal growth. It will be fun but also challenging. By the time you’ve learned to juggle your new responsibilities, the year will have flown by. Make the most of it, and don’t forget to create lasting memories.

Studying abroad is a life-changing experience filled with excitement and challenges. Homesickness is a natural part of the journey, but with the right mindset, you can manage it effectively and make the most of your time abroad. Over time, Vlissingen has become my new home, and my friends here have become like family. I feel comfortable and happy, knowing that whenever I face any problems or concerns, I can talk to my friends or reach out to a member of the HZ staff.

Stay busy, stay connected, and embrace the adventure—you'll come out stronger and more resilient on the other side!
