So you've decided to study abroad, that's great! But have you convinced your parents yet?
Studying abroad is exciting and truly a wonderful opportunity for learning and self-growth… but it is also a big change. Among other things to prepare for your depart, do not forget the most important one: convince your parents! Do not worry though, we got your back! Follow these tips to help them understand why studying abroad is a great idea:
1. Show you understand their worries
Your parents may worry about money, safety, or being far from home. Start by listening to their concerns and showing you take them seriously.
2. Explain the benefits
Tell them about the skills you'll gain, like independence, cultural knowledge, and better career opportunities. Studying abroad also helps you learn new languages, make international friends and discover yourself.
3. Prepare for questions about money
Explain how you plan to manage costs. Mention scholarships, part-time work opportunities, or affordable housing options, like those in Vlissingen or Middelburg at HZ University of Applied Sciences. This shows you’ve done your research.
And you have done your research, right? Otherwise you can always check out this blog: Can I Afford Studying Abroad? - Might be useful!
4. Focus on safety
Tell your parents about the support system abroad. For example, institutions like HZ provide housing help, student advisors to help out during your study choice, and events to make you feel at home once you arrive here.
5. Talk about the future
Studying abroad improves job opportunities. Employers value international experience because it shows you’re adaptable and skilled in working with people from different cultures: at HZ you will have plenty of opportunities to master these skills!
6. Involve them
Invite your parents to learn about the program, visit the university website with you or watch our webinars together. This way, they’ll see how well-prepared you are. If you have the chance, why not let your parents join you on our next Open Day!
At the end of the day, what parents wish is only the best for their child, so worrying comes natural. By showing respect for their concerns, being well-informed and proving you are serious and firm about your choice, you can help your parents feel confident about your decision to study abroad.
