He obtained a bachelor's degree in Environmental Science from Moravian University (USA) in 2009, followed by a master's degree in Biological Oceanography from Florida State University in 2013. After graduating, he worked for the State of Florida in environmental management and permitting.
In 2021, Chiu completed his PhD at the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ) in Yerseke. His research focused on the two-way interactions between benthic organisms, sediment composition, and seabed morphology, investigating how biological and physical processes jointly shape coastal seabeds and influence the formation and migration of bedforms.
Following his PhD, he worked as a marine ecologist and project manager at Wageningen Marine Research, where he led and contributed to research on benthic communities, sediment dynamics, habitat restoration, and the ecological effects of coastal management interventions.
Since September 2023, Chiu has been a coastal ecologist at the Building with Nature research group. His work combines field monitoring, data analysis, and applied research to improve understanding of coastal ecosystem functioning and to support the design and evaluation of nature-based solutions for estuarine and coastal environments.
