Climate change remains a key issue on the agenda in Zeeland. In 2019, the authorities in Zeeland decided to work together to draw up a regional climate adaptation strategy. A year and a half later, they presented the result of this collaboration: the ‘Zeeland Climate Adaptation Strategy (KasZ)’ (2021). In addition to the Climate Adaptation Strategy for Zeeland, local authorities and other stakeholders have jointly formulated a vision for the future, entitled ‘Destination Zeeland 2030’ (2022). The recreational boating sector – like many other sectors – is undergoing a sustainability transition. How are boat owners currently working towards this transition to sustainability? What is going well and where are they facing difficulties? How would they like to be supported in this transition? The HZ Coastal Tourism Knowledge Centre has answered these questions through this study.
Within the broader theme of sustainability, the study distinguishes between the following five topics:
- Electrification, fossil-free boating;
- Minimising underwater noise;
- Environmentally responsible behaviour;
- Fuel efficiency in boating behaviour;
- Reducing water pollution.
Based on these topics, a questionnaire was drawn up and 45 interviews were conducted at various locations. These interviews, together with the necessary desk research, have resulted in this report.
