In the Veerse Meer Area Vision 2020–2030, a large number of stakeholders – including the Province of Zeeland, local authorities, tourism businesses, nature organisations and the agricultural sector – have agreed on shared ambitions for the Veerse Meer area. In order to realise these ambitions, it is important to gain a better understanding of, amongst other things, the range of recreational activities on offer, the layout of the area and visitor flows. In 2025, the HZ Coastal Tourism Knowledge Centre, commissioned by the Province of Zeeland, provided building blocks that can contribute to this. These consist of data and studies that can assist in formulating a visitor strategy. The HZ Coastal Tourism Knowledge Centre is not involved in formulating this strategy, but solely provides knowledge in the form of building blocks. Specifically, this concerns the following topics:

Insight into visitor patterns

The study ‘Insight into visitor patterns at Lake Veere’ provides an insight into visitor numbers at a number of tourist and recreational locations around Lake Veere and on the lake itself, based on data from Resono. The study highlights which locations are relatively busy and which are relatively quiet, based on estimated visitor numbers. In addition, the study also provides insight into which periods, for example, may be relatively busier. It also provides information on the origin of visitors to the various locations; do they mainly come from nearby or from outside Zeeland? Finally, cross-visits between the various locations studied have also been mapped out. This study was carried out in collaboration with the Data Science Research Group at HZ University of Applied Sciences.

Insight into accommodation and leisure provision

The study ‘Insight into accommodation and leisure provision in the Veerse Meer area’ provides an insight into the scale and nature of the accommodation and leisure provision in the Veerse Meer area and its geographical distribution. It also includes an estimate of the number of overnight stays in the Veerse Meer area. For the purposes of this study, a distinction is made between the Veerse Meer area – defined by a specific boundary – the surrounding municipalities and the province of Zeeland.

Together, these reports provide a picture of the current tourism and leisure provision and visitor numbers in the Veerse Meer area. These analyses can help to inform well-founded decisions regarding the desired future development of the area, its leisure facilities, target groups and area branding.
