The square in front of the HZ University of Applied Sciences and the Joint Research Center Zeeland (JRCZ) at Het Groene Woud in Middelburg is complete.

In just a few months, it has transformed from a bare, stony construction site into a green, inviting forecourt where students and staff can meet. The green area also nicely connects with the Bolwerk. The completion was celebrated on Tuesday, October 29, in a small gathering.

Chairwoman of the board Barbara Oomen of HZ and Alderman Willemien Treurniet from the municipality of Middelburg officially opened the square by cutting a ribbon. Afterwards, the attendees toasted in the JRCZ with a glass of kombucha from Brouwerij Vermeersen, which works closely with the research group Marine Biobased Chemistry led by associate lector Tanja Moerdijk.

Oomen then presented the design for the new bike shed. This will be built on the site and will also have a green appearance, including a sedum roof.
