At the end of November, the HZ Debate Team travelled to Marrakech for a special event with representatives from all over the world.

Led by lecturers Kevin van Gorkom (Social Work) and Arjan de Vries (Social Work and Primary Education Teacher), the HZ Debate Team participated in a four-day event organised by the United Nations.

International simulation on world problems

From 21 to 24 November, the FWWMUN (Future We Want Model United Nations) took place. This is an international simulation of the United Nations where students and young people come together to discuss world problems and come up with solutions. During this event, participants take on the role of diplomats from UN member states and represent countries on various committees. Themes covered during this event were:

  • Disarmament and international security: the danger of homemade explosives and increasing levels of nuclear weapons
  • Economic and financial committee: illegal financial flows hindering sustainable developments and agricultural developments

‘A wonderful project’

The aim of participating in the event was to develop debating skills, critical thinking, teamwork and understanding of international relations. Kevin says of the trip: ‘It was very special to prepare for the conference with a group of students. A wonderful project where the added value is also mainly in stepping outside the bubble. The encounters with the other culture, the conversations about world issues and the universal similarities.’
