Helma Verstraeten is a researcher at the Research Group on Elderly Care (Lectoraat Ouderenzorg). Alongside this role, she is pursuing doctoral research on approaches to challenging behaviour in people with dementia and in geriatric rehabilitation care. Her research focuses on the one hand on the implementation of the STIP Method, and on the other hand on an exploration of challenging behaviour within geriatric rehabilitation care (GRZ). This PhD trajectory is a collaboration between HZ University of Applied Sciences, Leiden University Medical Center, Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences, and Amarijn.

In 2010, Helma completed her Bachelor’s degree in Nursing/Midwifery at HZ University of Applied Sciences/AP University of Applied Sciences Antwerp. After gaining clinical experience, she deepened her knowledge of care by earning a Master’s degree in Health Sciences at Maastricht University. She then worked for many years as a policy advisor at the elderly care organisation Amarijn.

Since 2024, she has been affiliated with the Research Group on Elderly Care. In her work, Helma enjoys connecting research, practice, and policy, with the aim of strengthening the quality of life and well-being of older people.
