Sarlote studies Civil Engineering at HZ in Middelburg. She is driven by her passion for creating durable structures and is inspired by her family's background in business management.

Why did you decide to study at HZ?

"From the beginning, the Netherlands was one of the options to pursue my studies in because of the high level of education. I applied to 5 universities in the Netherlands. In the end I decided to go to HZ University of Applied Sciences because I had talked to a HZ student during career days in my country Latvia two years earlier. I also chose HZ because Civil Engineering in this university was one of the best in the Netherlands."

Why did you choose Civil Engineering?

"When I was younger, I could not make up my mind about what I wanted to study. I knew that I wanted to work with people, make something which lasts and study something with physics and mathematics. Civil Engineering requires continuous learning, thinking to improve yourself every day and achieve the best results. Creating things that last, things that are durable structures that are useful to people but also inspire and create emotions, this is what I am passionate about. I chose Civil Engineering because I grew up in a family where we always had talks about business management and planning because both my parents are leaders in their respective industries and my uncle is a construction project manager in Latvia, so I have had the opportunity to get an insight into the profession."

What is the most valuable part of your studies?

"Of course, one of the most valuable things of this study programme is getting to know more about Civil Engineering and already taking part in the projects. But for me the most valuable thing is the people I have met here. All the professors are very open-minded and always ready to help. My study coach has played a big role in my integration. She always helps me and I can rely on her."

What would your advice be to a student applying to HZ?

"My advice to prospective students would be: do not be scared, join the online information sessions to get to know more about the programme you want to study or contact students who are studying at HZ. Start applying as soon as you can and be on time with submitting the required documents. For international students, do not be scared to go abroad because you will be grateful for your experience at HZ."
