Students of Logistical Engineering are working during their course on healthcare logistics, in collaboration with Zorgsaam, to combat the waste of medication.
Each year, millions of euros worth of medical supplies: medications, bandages, and incontinence materials—are destroyed in the Netherlands. It’s a waste of money and harmful to the environment. Moreover, there is a global shortage of these kinds of products.
At De Honte Hospital in Terneuzen and the elderly care facility De Blaauwe Hoeve in Hulst, part of Zorgsaam, students from HZ University of Applied Sciences are measuring medication waste and conducting inventory counts. They are doing this under the supervision of lecturers Gerda van den Beemt-Denissen and Roy Weeber, and in collaboration with the CareCycle Foundation.
Reuse
The students are also researching which medications can legally be reused and mapping out the medication process. By the end of the course, they must provide recommendations to Zorgsaam on how the organization can reduce medication waste. The collaboration was established in part through HZ Nexus.
The course began in early May and runs until mid-Jun
