A top-rated programme

Industrial Engineering & Management is a top-rated programme in the Netherlands, according to the Keuzegids 2025.

Programme overview

Discover how the programme is structured, from courses and projects to internships and extracurriculair activities.

In the first year of the course, you will learn the fundamentals of technology, economics (including business economics), organisation and management. You will work on projects for real companies. This will enable you to understand and apply new technologies, such as AI or robotics, to improve production processes and enhance product quality. You will also work on the smart management and optimal utilisation of business assets, such as installations, systems and equipment. In this way, you will discover what the field looks like and what career paths are open to you in the future.

In the second year, you will deepen your understanding of business processes and work on more complex real-world projects. You will focus on the environment and sustainability. For example, you might contribute to a study on the sustainable use and maintenance of offshore wind farms.

The third year of study is dominated by your minor and work placement abroad.

A minor allows you to deepen or broaden your knowledge and skills. You can take your minor at HZ or at another university of applied sciences in the Netherlands or abroad. View the full range of HZ minors here.

You will enter a work placement at a company in the Netherlands or abroad. For example, you might investigate the implications for price, quality and production speed if a company were to switch to biodegradable and environmentally friendly plastic.

The fourth year consists of two major improvement projects.

Collaborating with other students

You will work with other students on assignments for companies. Take, for example, an assignment in which you investigate how a new investment can be utilised and recouped as effectively as possible.

Internship

In the final semester, you will complete your final-year project at a company in the Netherlands or abroad. You will work independently on an improvement project in the field of quality, efficiency, sustainability or other business values. Your research and your improvement plan together form your final dissertation. A good example is a study into robotics at a shoe manufacturer: how can you make production more efficient and sustainable without compromising on quality or price?

HZ Honours Programme

Looking for an extra challenge alongside your degree? The HZ Honours Programme is an optional programme that runs alongside your bachelor’s and gives you the opportunity to work on real-world social and technological challenges. Together with students from different study programmes, you develop innovative solutions for national or international issues related to sustainability, technology, business and society.

Previous Honours students have travelled to destinations such as Costa Rica, Zanzibar, Rio de Janeiro, Bali and the Philippines to conduct research and collaborate with local organisations. The Honours Programme is all about entrepreneurship, innovation and making a difference in an increasingly complex world. Completing the programme earns you an additional certificate alongside your bachelor’s degree. You can apply from your second or third year of study.
