The Biobased Construction and Marine Biobased Chemistry research groups at HZ University of Applied Sciences attended once again Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven this year.
Together with research groups from Avans University of Applied Sciences, they can be seen in the Innovation Garden of MNEXT, the organisation in which both institutions collaborate in the field of practice-oriented research into the materials and energy transition.
Among others, lecturer Frank Huijben and researcher Marianna Coelho from HZ's Biobased Construction research group were present at DDW. They explained the biobased bathroom to visitors and showed them how biobased materials such as rammed earth can be used in homes. They also demonstrated how marine materials such as sand, algae and chitosan from shells can be used to create a sustainable shower.
Marine Biobased Chemistry, Tanja Moerdijk's research group, focuses on sustainable food. Visitors can sample kombucha, which incorporates local food waste streams, and products containing (fermented) seaweed, among other things. Tanja and her researchers are closely involved in developing these kinds of sustainable food initiatives.
