What is it really like to study abroad in the Netherlands? In this video, Ayden shares her experience as an exchange student from Taiwan, studying International Business at HZ University of Applied Sciences in Vlissingen.

Ayden talks about the hands-on, practical approach of her studies, the welcoming HZ community and how the International Office supported her with applying at HZ and arranging documents and accommodation.

Easy application and good support

For Ayden, applying to HZ went smoothly. “It was very easy to apply here. The international office was very helpful and very attentive to what I need. For example they arranged housing and my visa application. They sorted out everything for me."

Working on a student company

Ayden really enjoys the hands-on approach of HZ. For example, she is now building a real company together with students from other economics programmes. "Our team and I sell portable coffee machines, and I'm the supply chain lead. It is the most realistic way of handling business."

Friends and an international community

HZ's close-knit international community made it very easy for Ayden to make friends quickly. “It is very easy to make friends here. There is a strong international community where everyone knows each other. I meet my friends not only during lessons, but also in free time."

Free time in Zeeland

Exchange life is not only about studying. Ayden also enjoys her free time around Zeeland. “I like going to the beach, in Vlissingen, and also enjoy the lively city in Middelburg.”

The highlight: cycling and bikepacking

Some experiences are so typical for the Netherlands that you never forget them. For Ayden, cycling turned into the best part of her exchange. “I cycled all the way to Germany and to France, bikepacking! We can’t really do that in Thailand. For me, it was truly the highlight.”

Ayden’s advice: don't be nervous about exchange

For future exchange students, Ayden has an important and reassuring tip. “I would tell the upcoming exchange students not to be anxious and nervous about anything. Everything is well arranged and people are very nice here. And I’m pretty sure that you’re going to make friends.”
