There are days when everything just seems to fall into place. Saturday 3 October was one such day at the Joint Research Centre Zeeland. Around a thousand children, their parents and members of the public visited Science Day at the research lab on Het Groene Woud in Middelburg.
Outside – under a lovely autumn sun – and inside, the research groups and study programmes from HZ University of Applied Sciences, Scalda and the Delta Climate Centre introduced visitors to their work through fun hands-on and thought-provoking activities.
Crawling creatures and stable ships
For example, they could go in search of creepy-crawlies, contribute ideas on nature and tourism, play a game in which they had to keep a ship stable, learn all sorts of things about flax and dykes, make music with fruit, build a dyke in Minecraft and create (and taste) a plate of healthy food. As part of the Future Crew initiative, they were also invited to write down what they would like to research in the future… with excellent results.
The JRCZ has been organising Science Day for years in collaboration with the ZB. On this day, both venues are dedicated to science. A free mini-train runs between the two venues all day long.
