HZ aims to be a safe and pleasant learning environment. In such an environment, students and staff can develop both personally and professionally. You may find yourself in a situation where you are faced with inappropriate behaviour. In such a case, you can speak to a confidential advisor.

Inappropriate behaviour

Inappropriate behaviour refers to behaviour that you perceive as undesirable. It can take various forms. There are four categories: discrimination, sexual harassment, bullying, and aggression & violence.

Discrimination means that a person or group is treated unfairly on the basis of, for example, skin colour, gender, sexual orientation or religion.

Sexual harassment, which includes any form of sexual advances, physical contact, as well as sexually suggestive comments or requests for sexual favours.

Bullying can be verbal, non-verbal or even physical. Examples include making gestures, excluding someone, putting pressure on someone or insulting them.

Aggression and violence encompass any situation in which someone is harassed, intimidated, threatened or attacked. This can be physical, verbal or psychological.

Inappropriate behaviour can occur within HZ, but also outside it. For example, if you bump into a student or staff member in your free time, or if someone approaches you online or via a messaging app. This may involve interactions between students, between staff members, between a student and a staff member, or between someone from within HZ and someone from outside HZ – for example, an internship supervisor or a research project supervisor.

Make inappropriate behaviour a topic of discussion; you can do this with a fellow student, a colleague, a manager, a study career coach, a dean or a programme manager, for example. You can also speak to a confidential advisor. Anyone who experiences inappropriate behaviour can report it or ask for advice, even if you are a witness to inappropriate behaviour. The confidential advisor is there for all students and staff, as well as for work placement and/or research supervisors from outside HZ. The confidential advisor will listen carefully to your story. They will provide support, help you think through solutions and refer you to the appropriate services if necessary.
