On Monday, September 22, HZ University of Applied Sciences and Rijkswaterstaat will host the symposium 'The Eastern Scheldt Storm Surge Barrier and the Future'. It will take place at the Joint Research Center Zeeland in Middelburg.

The Eastern Scheldt Storm Surge Barrier is an icon of Dutch hydraulic engineering ingenuity and a symbol of the balance between safety, ecology, and economy. The central question of the symposium is: 'What will the future of this structure look like in the year 2100?'

Speakers

Willy Dekker, Chief Engineer-Director at Rijkswaterstaat, and Jasper van Houcke, lead lecturer at HZ, will open the symposium. Other contributions include Jesse Simons from Rijkswaterstaat on testing the scale model of the barrier at Deltares, and Sunke Trace-Kleeberg from the University of Southampton on the maintenance and renewal of storm surge barriers in the context of climate change. Researchers Padraig Naughton from the HZ research group on Asset Management and William Hazel from Data Science will demonstrate how data and smart management contribute to a safe and sustainable future.
