To be accepted as a student there are certain university admission requirements you have to meet. These are dependent on your chosen field of study and your level of English. Information given below explains our general, additional and language requirements.

To qualify for general university admission, you are required to have a diploma equivalent to the Dutch Secondary Education Diploma (HAVO/VWO/ MBO level 4). With a diploma mentioned on the foreign acceptable diplomas list, you are admissible anyway provided you have met all the additional requirements. If your diploma is not on this list, we invite you to apply as well. We will then need to evaluate the level of your diploma. To make sure your diploma is evaluated fairly, we work with the Dutch ENIC/NARIC (NUFFIC), an organisation that specialises in the assessment of international education qualifications.

Our Master students have different entry requirements that you can check here.

Depending on your chosen programme, there may be additional entry requirements you have to meet. The most important are listed below.

All courses and examinations will be in English, so you need a good command of spoken and written English. The level required for admission should be an equivalent of the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of 6.0. For the scores of other accepted language tests than IELTS, the table below applies.

IELTS Academic
The IELTS Academic test is suitable for those wanting to study in an English-speaking environment or university (higher education).
We cannot accept IELTS home edition tests.

TOEFL
We also accept the TOEFL Home Edition Tests in case it is not possible to make use of the regular language tests as stated above because language test centers on location are closed or inaccessible due to unsafe situations in a country.

TOEIC
As long as the modules ‘Speaking and Writing’ and ‘Listening and Reading’ were successfully completed.

Cambridge
In order to be able to verify your Cambridge English results online we kindly request you to share your results online by logging into the Candidate Results website and choosing to share them with HZ University of Applied Sciences.

Exempted from the English language test requirement are students with:

  • an International Baccalaureate (subject 'English A Language and Literature HL or SL’ / 'English B Language and Literature HL’)
  • a (High School) diploma from an international school accredited in the US or by an official international organisation or UK GCSE/GCE certificates
  • a European Baccalaureate diploma with at least 50% of the subjects taught in English and English as a first foreign language
  • a French Baccalauréat diploma including the ‘Section Européennes’ or ‘Option Internationale’ (is currently called ‘Baccalauréat Francais international (BFI)’)

If you graduated in The Netherlands, United Kingdom, Ireland, United States, Canada (except Quebec), Malta, Australia or New-Zealand or if you are holding a diploma (including English as an exam subject) listed on the diploma list, drawn up on behalf of the associations of institutions of higher education, you do not need to take a mandatory English test. Provided that your final grade for English language on your diploma is sufficient.

If you do not meet the above education requirements and if you are at least 21 years old you may be exempted from the general admission requirement. HZ provides the possibility of taking an alternative entrance exam.
