Language level

Study in an English speaking country
If you wish to study in an English speaking country, such as the UK, USA, Canada, Singapore, Hong Kong or India, you must meet one of the following requirements for your level of English:
• Satisfactory completion of course EN39002 or EN39003 or EN39004
• Possess B2 certificate or higher, or equivalent IELTS or TOEFL score/certificate.

Study in language of destination country
Students of some programmes take courses in the language of the country of destination. This may be German, Spanish, or French.
    • On the Study Abroad Minor - destinations website, you can read what level the host partner institution requires for participation in subjects in the country's language. This is usually B2 level.
    • Some partner institutions require only a B1 level. However, experience shows that this is not sufficient to take classes in Spanish, French or German. B2 level is actually the minimum level to succeed.

Taking subjects in English in other countries
If you are going to study in Finland for example, you will take the subjects there in English. In that case, the required level is usually B2. See above under ‘Studying in an English-speaking country’ which course you need to have passed to meet this requirement. The same applies if, e.g., you are going to study in English in France, Spain or Germany.

Permission of the HZ exam committee/DEX

You have to get permission of the HZ examination board to participate in the Study Abroad minor as well as for the courses you would like to follow at the partner institute.

Rik van den Ouden, a Business Administration student about his time in Seoul, South Korea:

Ever since I knew it was possible to go on an exchange, I knew for sure that I was going to do it. I wanted to go as far away from the Netherlands as possible and with a preference for Asia. Studying abroad is an excellent opportunity to develop yourself, and it is a huge boost for my English.

Dongguk University is a Buddhist university, and there are multiple temples on the campus. I am following two courses about Buddhism, which I find really interesting. Both of these courses are given by monks, and there are also some monks who follow the courses themselves.

Everyone at the university is very friendly, they will always help you if you’ve got any problems.

I'm having a great time here. Seoul is truly a metropolis where they have everything you can imagine. The city is a cool mix between old Korea with palaces, narrow little streets and traditions, and modern Korea with lots of technology.
