Every company with technical installations has to deal with mechatronics. This is where the knowledge of electrical, mechanical and software engineering come together.

For example, robots or machines that weld, sort, clean or operate independently. You will design these machines and carry out research to make them even smarter and more user-friendly. This is how the machine used to fish plastic from the oceans was created.

Mechatronics will provide many jobs in the coming years, especially in the fields of health, mobility, energy, safety and the climate.

This is Mechatronic Engineering

In the third year of the programme, you choose a minor. A minor will allow you to deepen or broaden your knowledge and skills. You can do this at the HZ or at another university of applied sciences in the Netherlands or abroad.

The other half of the year you will do an internship. You can choose whether you stay in the Netherlands or go abroad.

In the final year, you choose one study route: Mechatronic Engineering or Energy and Process Engineering. In the first 6 months, you will have classes and projects.

In the second half of the year, you will work on your graduation project at a company. You design and research technical improvements and innovations in a company during your final project. The choice is yours whether to do this in the Netherlands or abroad.

In this year, all your knowledge and skills come together and you can prove that you have mastered the profession. With your diploma in your possession, you can start working as an engineer!

In the coming years, Information and Communication Technology, Civil Engineering, Engineering and Maritime Officer students will be working on the Hzensor boat: a 2-metre boat that will sail autonomously and unmanned through the province of Zeeland. Read more about the project.

Study in The Netherlands

Are you thinking of studying in Holland? An excellent choice! We tell you why in our brochure.

What can you become with Mechatronic Engineering?

As an Engineer graduate you can find yourself in various professions. You have a broad education, but the Mechatronics Engineering study route also includes a number of specific professions, such as:

  • Mechatronic Engineer
  • Robot designer
  • Systems Engineer

Bachelor's degree

Congratulations, you've now graduated! From now on you may use the title ‘Bachelor of Science’ or ‘Engineer’. Did you participate in the Honours Programme? You will get an extra certificate with your bachelor's degree.

Upon graduation, you can enroll in a Master programme. If you want to do this abroad, you can usually get direct access to the Master programme. In the Netherlands, you may be required to follow a pre-Master’s programme. You can start a master's programme through a bridging programme, such as:

  • Master Mechatronics
  • Master Mechanical Engineering
