The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), drawn up by the UN, are guidelines for a sustainable world in which we make better use of scarce resources. These goals can only be achieved if we fully improve the process from raw material to product and vice versa.

In this study route you will learn to conduct practice-oriented research. You will use advanced analytical techniques to answer your research questions. Consider, for example, making biodegradable plastics that can be easily recycled. Experts from large multinationals and market leaders in their respective fields, share their experience with you by providing guest lectures. You work with other students on regional projects related to the marine environment that benefits the province of Zeeland.

This is the Applied Chemistry study track

In the first two study years you follow a basic programme, in which Chemistry and Life Sciences are the central subjects. You learn to conduct experiments in the laboratory, to interpret the results, to plan follow-up studies and to communicate your results. In the third year you choose your study track: Applied Chemistry or Life Sciences.

You embark on the chosen study track and choose a minor or internship. For example, you can do an international internship, take courses at another university (pre-master) or conduct your own research or project in one of our research groups.

In the fourth study year, you work on various research projects at one or two companies in the Netherlands or abroad. In your graduation research you must prove you have reached the Bachelor of Science level.

Study in The Netherlands

Are you thinking of studying in the Netherlands? An excellent choice! We tell you why in our brochure.

After following this study track

The job prospects are excellent: the chemical sector is desperate for well-trained men and women. You can work in many professions, such as:

  • Chemical-physical analyst
  • Researcher (R&D)
  • GCMS analyst
  • Environmental consultant
  • Laboratory manager
  • Technical education assistant
  • Chemistry teacher

Congratulations, you have graduated! You may now use the title ‘Bachelor of Science’ after your name

Would you like to continue studying after the Chemistry programme? Then there are several possibilities. At several universities you can start a master's programme by taking a bridging programme, such as:

  • Master Analytical Sciences
  • Master of Science in Chemistry
  • Master Molecular Sciences
