    Erasmus+-Grant

    The Erasmus+ grant for study is an EU scholarship and is only valid outside Europe in certain countries. On top of the basic Erasmus+ scholarship amount, an additional top-up of €250 per month is available for students with a financial, functional, or medical disability.

    Important information & grant amounts 2025/2026

    Erasmus+ Grant

    In the Information and Procedure Erasmus+ 2025–2026 document , you will find all conditions, grant amounts, and procedures.

    Previously, the Erasmus+ grant was intended for study or internships within the EU. However, we now face global challenges such as climate change, issues related to peace, security, and digitalization. Addressing these challenges requires intensified international cooperation. The EU recognizes that this starts with you when you choose to study outside the EU (see the 'partner countries' below).

    For which countries you can apply for this grant

    • Asia: South Korea or Japan;
    • Latin America: Chile and Argentina;
    • North America: The US and Canada.

    Grant amount and number of grants

    The scholarship is €700 per month. In 2025–2026, a limited number of scholarships will be available for internships.

    Erasmus+ Top-up

    The European Union finds inclusion very important and has therefore made additional Erasmus+ funds available for students from underrepresented groups. This supplementary financial support of €250 per month, on top of the regular Erasmus+ grant, is intended to enable students with financial, functional, or health-related challenges to also participate in a study or internship abroad. See the section ‘Before your study’ to learn how to apply for the Erasmus+ top-up.

    Travel contribution

    You are entitled to receive a contribution to your travel costs. You find the amounts in this table.

    Contribution of €250 for a Language Course

    Through Erasmus+, you can receive up to €250 if you take a language course during your internship. Check the section ‘Before your internship starts’ to learn how to apply for this.
    We strongly recommend that you take the EU's online language course. It’s free of charge

    Selection criteria

    Every student can apply for the grant The selection is based on the following:
    • Amount of the supplementary grant from DUO.
    Students who receive the maximum supplementary grant will be selected first. For non-EU students who are not eligible for a DUO supplementary grant, the parents’ annual income statement is used. If you have questions, please contact grants@hz.nl.
    • Motivation letter in English.
    See ‘before your study starts’ for the content requirements of this letter.

    If there are still more applications than available grants after this, selection will be based on the following criteria:
    • Academic results: the average grade of the propaedeutic year.
    • The requirement from the European Commission to ensure good distribution across different continents.
    • Students returning to their home country will have the lowest priority for receiving the scholarship.

    When do you receive the Erasmus+ grant?

    You will receive your grant in two instalments. The first payment,(70%) of the total awarded amount, will be transferred before the start of your internship, once you have submitted all the required documents. The remaining 30% will be paid after the completion of your internship and submission of the final required documents.

    Please note (!): Make sure to carefully read the information under ‘Before your study starts' and ‘At the end of your study’ to avoid missing any application or submission deadlines and missing out on the grant.

    Disclaimers

    • This scholarship cannot be combined with another scholarship for outside the EU in the same academic year. If you are awarded this scholarship, any other applications for scholarships will be withdrawn.
    • If the number of Erasmus+ grant applications fits within the Erasmus+ budget, all Erasmus+ grant applications will be provisionally approved.
    • If the number of Erasmus+ grant applications exceeds the Erasmus+ budget, the grant may be awarded for less than the full duration of your study abroad.
    • One of the conditions is that students originally from a country other than the Netherlands may return to their home country, but priority for provisional grant approval will be given to other students.
