Researcher-lecturer Coastal Ecologist
Size: 0.8-1.0 FTE (32-40 hours)

Your work as a researcher-lecturer
The research group conducts research in a wide range of projects for a variety of organisations (regional, national, European). The research group focuses on research into natural forms of coastal defence such as the application of oyster reefs and salt marshes in flood-dense landscapes. Based on your expertise, you will participate in the research to map the consequences of technical interventions on the ecological functioning of the coastal system. You do this by carrying out fieldwork and analysing data. For you as a researcher-lecturer, carrying out practice-oriented research as part of a team is central. You apply your knowledge and skills with enthusiasm in carrying out the subprojects and in training students to become enterprising, innovative and driven professionals in a sustainable world. You do this by:
- Independently conduct hands-on, ecological research, including
- Conducting fieldwork along the land-water transitions of Zeeland's delta waters and sandy coast;
- Analysing and interpreting research results;
- Guiding colleagues to achieve project objectives;
- Collaborating and aligning with partners in the region;
- Contribute to teaching multidisciplinary courses/study projects, and their development;
- Supervising students.
The team
The Building with Nature research group is one of the 10 research groups within the Technology Water & Environment domain. It is an enthusiastic team of researchers with different disciplinary backgrounds and a broad project portfolio. Cooperation within the research group and with other research groups within and outside HZ is central.
Are you the perfect fit?
With your experience from the field of ecology, you can directly lead research projects and impart knowledge, motivate and inspire students. Besides focusing on challenging projects, you also maintain focus on the analysis and valorisation of research data. You have experience in conducting applied research and can therefore initiate and carry out interesting research projects. In addition, you have:
- A completed relevant Master's degree, e.g. Biology, Ecology, Marine Ecology, Water Management or Environmental Science. A (nearly) completed PhD is a plus.
- Experience in designing and conducting ecological monitoring in the broad coastal zone, from hard levee bodies, through dynamic intertidal areas to soft subtidal substrates.
- Strong analytical skills. You are familiar with spatial and statistical models and experienced in the analysis and evaluation of large data sets.
- Experience with geographical information systems or of a programming language such as R or Python.
- Experience in presenting scientific results, drafting reports and giving presentations. You are also able to translate practice-oriented research into peer-reviewed publications in collaboration with colleagues;
- Several years of work experience, preferably as a researcher or policy advisor;
- Good knowledge of the Dutch and English languages in word and writing.
