Centre of Expertise Biobased Economy
Professionals are required in order to be able to successfully make the transition to a biobased economy. The Centre of Expertise Biobased Economy helps companies with their biobased ambitions, by renewing the Higher Vocational Education together with them and by conducting applied research which matters. For example, the CoE BBE organised highly trained professionals, which can take responsibility for and design the transition to a biobased society.
What is a biobased economy?
A Biobased Economy (BBE) is all about the transition from an economy which runs on fossil fuels to an economy which runs on biomass as a raw material: from ‘fossil based’ to ‘bio based’. We are expecting biomass to take on an increasingly more important role in our economy during the forthcoming years. This is for various different reasons, but the most important ones are innovation, economic opportunities, energy independence and reducing greenhouse gases.
The Centre of Expertise Biobased Economy (CoE BBE) is a collaboration between Avans Hogeschool and HZ University of Applied Sciences. Centres of Expertise have been established by the Ministry of Education in order to more explicitly link higher education to regional economic priorities. Action-oriented collaborations within which companies and educational institutions, government authorities and other public organisations can innovate, experiment and invest together, focussed on future-proof vocational education and professional practices.
Research is conducted from the Biobased Building, Biobased Products and Biobased Energy lectorates, as well as the Biopolymers research group. We help companies and government authorities with realising biobased innovations in a variety of projects, with contributions from both teachers and students. For example, we are working on the development of a biobased bicycle-pedestrian bridge made of biobased composite in the Biobased Bridge project. Another example is the Functional Stability Biopolymers projects, which researches the application of bioplastics in sustainable products like mobile phones and isolation foam.
The Education pillar of the Centre of Expertise Biobased Economy is mainly in place for students and teachers. This consists of, to name but a few, (international) biobased projects, education modules, minors and graduation assignments. This has included the development of an online project, the MOOC Biobased Economy Introduction, where students, teachers and professionals can become acquainted with a biobased economy. A biobased set of lessons has been developed for primary schools, which can be presented by Pabo students and teachers within primary education. Various different courses are also involved with biobased projects, including Engineering, Built Environment, Art, Economy, Law and Chemistry.
Have you become interested in the biobased economy? Do you have any questions regarding research, projects, modules or graduation assignments? Then please do get in touch. We would be more than happy to be of assistance. Also visit the Centre of Expertise Biobased Economy website for more information.
