My name is Julian. I am a first year Chemistry student at HZ University of Applied Sciences in Vlissingen, the Netherlands. I come from Bethlehem, Palestine, and I have chosen to study in the Netherlands because of its beauty, its deep-rooted history, the friendliness of the people, and the peacefulness of Vlissingen.
HZ offers students the opportunity of applying the knowledge they gain in real-life situations, and this is why this university was on top of my list. For example, the Chemistry students started our first year courses with an excursion to a brewery. In my opinion, this was better than a three-hour lecture to get introduced to the concept of applied sciences.
Regarding the student life, HZ is highly careful to ease the process of adapting and blending in for national and international students, through organizing a variety of events and activities. For instance; parties, excursions, the kick-off festival, inviting institutions’ representatives to introduce students to the real world.
Moreover, HZ gives us the opportunity to go abroad for one to three semesters. Either for projects, internships or a minor. Such opportunities help students develop their confidence and widen their relations in an international setting even more.
Honestly, leaving home and leaving everything behind was one of the hardest decisions I had to make. Nevertheless, here I am now, living in a cozy atmosphere, between lots of friends, whom I now consider my second family. I am looking forward to creating more and more wonderful memories with the people I now love in the peaceful and diverse city I now adore.
