An education with a future!

To conform to the modern quality of life standards increasingly higher demands are made. Are you going to be the chemist that meets these demands? Will you be the person to put products on the market that do not harm the environment? Will you come up with ways to solve and prevent pollution?  Or would you prefer to do medical research? Then, the Bachelor of Applied Sciences offers you a limitless future!

Approximately 40% of the study will consist of experiments in the laboratories. These experiments are carried out in our spacious laboratories with advanced equipment. Quality is paramount in every respect.

The first two years introduce you to the professional field and you learn everything about general chemistry and biology. In the third year you choose between the majors 'Applied Chemistry' and 'Life Sciences'.

Applied Chemistry
Applied Chemistry trains you to become a researcher in the field of applied laboratory research. You will study the composition, the concentration and the quality of raw materials and products such as drinks, shampoo, medicines but also food products. You will also conduct researches into organic materials found in natural products and deal with environmental problems.

Lifes Sciences
In Life Sciences you study subjects such as bacteriology and virology, epidemology and immunobiology, the development of modern vaccines and the application of DNA techniques in the identification of micro-organisms. You also learn to use fluorescence imaging techniques. Life Sciences are fields in experimental scientific research that focus on the molecular biological processes of ‘life’. This ranges from viruses, microorganisms and plants, to human beings. The study of biological molecular processes involves advanced laboratory experimental work, like genomics, proteomics and cell culturing.

The objective of the research is to find new methodology and innovative tools, which will contribute to the enhancement of technological knowledge for the benefit of man and his environment. This includes improvement of medical diagnostic tools, pharmaceutical drugs and vaccines, but also the improvement of plant & cattle breeding.

Accreditation
The system of accreditation in higher education aims to guarantee that study programmes meet the highest standards. As all accredited programmes of Universities of Applied Sciences, this programme is officially recognized and is listed in the Central Register of Higher Education Programmes (Croho).

Degree
After successfully graduating from the Chemistry programme at HZ, you will hold the degree of Bachelor of Applied Sciences (B.AS).

Duration of the study

At HZ University of Applied Sciences, as in any other University of Applied Sciences, the Chemistry programme lasts  four years (click here for more details regarding the four-years programme), but a three-years fast-track route is also available for highly motivated and excellent students (click here for more information about the three-years fast-track route).
