Step-by-step plan

When you decide that you would like to follow a Minor programme abroad, there are - of course - a number of things that you have arrange. Where to start? We briefly describe the steps here below. When you are actually studying at HZ, you will get more extensive information!

Step-by-step plan for studying abroad

Step 1  Orientate
Which semester am I going abroad? Which countries/cities are interesting? Which partner institutes offer a programme that fits in with my studies?

Step 2  Call in an advisor
At this stage involve one of the staff members at the International Office.
Study abroad: Johannetta van der Vlies, contact; jvlies@hz.nl
Work placement abroad: Astrid Umbgrove, am.umbgrove@hz.nl

Step 3  Make documents in order
There is a number of documents that you will always have to produce, such as a permission from your Bachelor programme coordinator/Student Career Coach, an English transcript, subjects chosen in consultation with the programme coordinator, permission for the subjects chosen by your programme coordinator.
Often you need to produce a declaration on your level of English and sometimes a permission of the exams committee, a ‘Letter of Recommendation’, a certificate of enrolment at HZ, a certificate that you are undertaking your study abroad in the scope of your HZ education, a certificate of sufficient financial means (in case of a visa) and sometimes an estimate.
In some situations, you need to arrange for a visa and/or work permit.

Step 4  Apply and enrol for study
The application at a partner institute takes place via the International Office. Within Europe this needs to be done ultimately at end of March, and outside Europe ultimately at end of February. After that: you can no longer apply for a scholarship.

Step 5  Arrange documents after application
A number of issues need to be well-arranged, such as applying for a scholarship, arranging accommodation, insurances and possibly vaccinations.

Step 6  Prepare
This is possibly the most fun part of the organisation! Study the language and culture of the country you are going to visit and arrange the last essentials.

Bear in mind:
The starting dates/semesters of studies abroad do not always coincide with those at HZ. In some countries, the semesters begin at the start or middle of January. Bear this in mind when your previous semester is your work placement semester!
