Province of Zeeland

Zeeland is well known for its stunning countryside and extensive natural beauty. Its spectacular coast and spacious beaches make it a favourite destination for people with an interest in water sports such as sailing, wind- and kite surfing.

However, there is more to Zeeland than beaches and water alone! Historical towns such as Veere, Zierikzee and Middelburg have traces of the past everywhere you look and make for very interesting sightseeing. The countryside has many wonderful farms where you can get a taste of country life and savour some exquisite hand-made Gouda cheeses.

Deltaworks
The Deltaworks make up another famous Zeeland highlight. These impressive constructions protect the province against the destructive forces of the sea.

Economy
Although Zeeland is a relatively small, rural province, most people find employment in the industrial and service sectors. The harbour and industrial areas in and around the ports of Vlissingen and Terneuzen, which are both located on the river Scheldt, form the heart of the Zeeland economy. Multinationals have establishments near Vlissingen. The business services sector plays also an ever-growing part in the Zeeland economy.
Last but not least, there is a large tourism industry, which is an important source of income for the province.

Getting around
Most places in Zeeland are located near to one another, making it easy to travel by bicycle. However, the Netherlands are well known for the public transport system. If your destination is too far away, you can take a bus or train to get there.
